Two people were found fatally shot in Peconic Wednesday morning in an apparent murder-suicide.
Police say a middle-aged man and elderly woman were found dead in a farmhouse. A semiautomatic pistol was recovered at the scene.
The victims are believed to be mother and son. According to police, the son shot his mother in the torso before turning the gun on himself and shooting himself in the head.
The pair had rented the Peconic home for more than 12 years, according to neighbors. They were instructed they would have to vacate the 10-acre property after the landlord sold it.
The landlord contacted authorities after being unable to reach the family for days. Police arrived to find the home filled with gas before spotting the bodies.
Neighbors say the pair kept to themselves.
"She was very friendly, but he ? he would say hello and goodbye," says Tom Burdy. "He seemed very much like he wanted to be left alone."
