Some residents in the Town of East Hampton are asking for a day of peace and quiet during hunting season.

For a few months in the late fall and winter, sportsmen are allowed to hunt on town property. Even though hunting is strictly regulated by the town and state, some residents say they need a break from the noise and potential threat from stray shots or arrows while enjoying the outdoors.

Yuka Silvera says she's seen several deer and duck hunters in the woods and along the water near her East Hampton home. She and others are backing a proposal now being considered that would prohibit hunting on town property one day a week -- either on Saturdays or Sundays.

Terrence O'Riordan heads the East Hampton Sportsman Alliance. He says hunting is already highly regulated and that eliminating one weekend day of hunting each week would severely limit sportsmen. He feels the proposal is only designed to chip away at hunters' already limited access to town land.

The Town of East Hampton says the board could discuss the hunting ban proposal at a future meeting, however a date has not been set.

Supporters and opponents of the proposal say they will be showing up at all meetings in force until a decision is made.

The proposed hunting ban in East Hampton town would not affect hunting on private or state land.
