Nassau County has removed several mug shots from its drunken driver ?Wall of Shame? in accordance with a state law, which has some calling the project unfair.
Those arrested for drunken driving that are under 19 years old are no longer being included on the wall. Names and mug shots of people arrested for DWI have been published online and in the media since Memorial Day.
A state law allows judges to grant offenders under 19 youthful-offender status, which seals their records. Nassau?s Deputy Executive Francis X. Ryan says the county wants to give those violators the benefit of the doubt.
Tara Keenan-Thomson, of the ACLU, says making public the names of people who have only been arrested and not convicted tarnishes the ?innocent until proven guilty? notion.
Some drivers say it shouldn?t matter how old the offenders are. They say if they?re dangerous, their names should be out there.
County officials say they?ve removed the information of eight individuals due to age.
