News 12 Long Island has learned that the driver who struck and killed a young East Islip mother in front of her own home has an open court case from a previous incident involving drugs.

Suffolk County police say Barbara Cottone, 50, was behind the wheel of a 2007 Chrysler that jumped a curb and hit Skye Brunetti, 25, Tuesday morning as she was walking home from her child's bus stop on Union Boulevard. Brunetti died at the scene.

Cottone has an open court case after being arrested by state police four months ago. According to police, Cottone was driving on Lincoln Avenue just north of Main Street in Sayville, when she ran a stop sign. Troopers pulled her over and allegedly found pills in her car.

Cottone faces charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance and failure to stop in that incident. Her attorney says that she did have a prescription for Xanax, but refused to say anything else.

Brunetti's family is now questioning why Cottone hasn't been charged in connection with the new case and is demanding answers.

"We'd like to know what caused this," says relative Tom Lindner. "Why did [Cottone] do this?"

News of Cottone's previous troubles has Lindner frustrated. "That says to me that she has no morals, no scruples," he says. "No care whatsoever for anybody."

Late Friday afternoon, News 12 confirmed that the fatal crash is now being investigated by the Suffolk County District Attorney Office's Vehicular Crime Bureau. News 12 is told that the county crime lab does have a sample of the driver's blood taken after the crash, which is being tested for drugs and alcohol.
