Holding pinwheels and props, dozens of people rallied outside LIPA headquarters in Uniondale Monday to urge the power authority to approve offshore wind turbines to generate power for Long Island.
Some residents also made a plea in person during the LIPA meeting.
As News 12 Long Island has reported, a proposed wind farm off Jones Beach was rejected nearly a decade ago. This month, federal officials designated an area off Long Beach as a possible site for a wind farm and released a simulation showing what the turbines might look like from the shore.
Another project is being considered off Montauk.
When asked at the meeting if anyone opposed wind power, no one in the audience raised their hand. However, fishermen have raised concerns about the turbines' effects on marine life.
Bonnie Brady, with the Long Island Commercial Fishing Association, says tides around the turbines kick up silt and create dead zones on the ocean floor where fish live.
LIPA's chairman says there is a lot to consider and that there's a great resource off the coast waiting to be tapped.
