More than two dozen cats have been seized from a home in Westbury.
The home on Middlecamp Road was raided Wednesday morning after a search warrant was issued.
The homeowner, 58-year-old Valerie Varnuska, was arrested and arraigned late Wednesday.
Varnuska has been charged with multiple counts of animal neglect.The Hempstead Town Building Department has declared the house unfit to live in.
A spokeswoman told News 12 that the animals that were removed from the house will now be treated at the North Shore Animal League headquarters. Depending on their health condition, the cats will be put up for adoption.
A judge has ordered that Varnuska be held for a psychiatric examination.
