A Brentwood dog was honored Monday for saving its owner and her grandson from a house fire earlier this month.

Carolyn Swinson says her newly adopted mastiff mix, Bear, woke her up on the morning of July 17 after her home had caught fire. She says she grabbed her grandson, DJ, and the dog and ran to safety.

As a reward, Town of Islip Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt presented the pooch with an edible key to the town.

Meanwhile, Swinson and her grandson are living in a temporary trailer on their front lawn. Renovations to the home are expected to take a year.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
