A big surprise was in store Saturday for a doctor who lives in Shoreham.
The community organized a car parade for Dr. April Caperna, who works at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.
She has been caring for patients with COVID-19 who are on ventilators, and has caused her much stress.
As a way of boosting her spirit, family, friends, and coworkers got in their cars and drove by her house – honking their horns in appreciation.
"I had no idea this was going on and to come out and see this – talk about refilling your bucket. This just completely refilled my bucket to continue to do all I do every day," she said.
Dr. Caperna has so far been able to successfully get seven patients off of ventilators – one of those survivors participated in the parade.
