A Dix Hills couple is claiming that their safety deposit box was robbed of $100,000 to $150,000 worth of valuables.

Laila Ilyas, a doctor at St. Catherine's Medical Center, says her safety deposit box at the Citibank branch in Garden City was broken into.

Ilyas says she checked on all items in the box in August 2012, but when she returned last week, the box was open and items were missing.

Their attorney, Kenneth Mollins says that the bank refused to report the theft to police. In an email, Citibank told News 12 Long Island that it is common practice for the customer, not the bank, to file a police report when valuables are missing from saftey deposit boxes.

The couple's attorney says other safety deposit box owners should be worried and check on their valuables.

In a statement, Citibank admitted the box was inadvertently left unlocked. "The protection of our customers accounts is our top priority," said the statement. "We are working closely with the authorities and conducting an internal review."
