A disgraced member of the Hempstead school board changed his tune and pleaded guilty to insurance fraud charges Wednesday.
Terry Grant insisted on his innocence repeatedly from the moment Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice charged the dentist with 40 counts of insurance fraud in July of 2006. Rice claims Grant filed false claims to receive money for dental procedures he did not perform. Wednesday, Grant took a plea bargain, which centers on his admission of guilt to five felonies, including grand larceny and falsifying business records.
As part of the deal, Grant will pay $10,000 in restitution and an additional $20,000 in fines. Sentencing will take place in March. Rice's office is recommending up to four years in jail. Grant must also surrender his license to practice dentistry and may never again serve on the Hempstead school board.
