An after-school
program director from Elmont was arrested for sex-related crimes that occurred
last month, detectives say.
Daniel Butler,
41, is employed by the Fullness of Joy Ministries Church in Jamaica.
According to
detectives, the 10-year-old female victim attends the after-school program and
was also present at Butler’s home for childcare at 81 Rockmart Ave. in Elmont.
The incident
allegedly happened at the Elmont home when he was babysitting the victim.
Nassau police
tell News 12 that Butler turned himself in.
Butler is charged
with rape in the first degree, sexual abuse in the first degree and endangering
the welfare of a child.
He was arraigned
on Thursday in Hempstead.
One man who did
not want to show his face on camera says he knows Butler and was shocked to see
his mugshot.
“Because of the
fact that I know these people forever and I have never seen this guy as a predator,
I’ve seen him as a community leader,” the man said.
News 12 attempted
to speak to Butler at his home about the allegations, but he locked the doors
and remained silent.
His wife
responded by saying, “It’s a family situation, it’s private, I don’t even want
it out there.”
Some parents
picking up their children from the Jamaica church told News 12 off camera that
they are unsure if they will be sending them back to the after-school program.
