Crews continued Tuesday to work to remove an old dam along the Lamington River between Bedminster and Branchburg in Somerset County.

The concrete structure has been sitting in the water since the 1800s, and is outdated and in need of removal to protect the area.

Large boulders have been dropped on the opposite side of the dam to raise the river bed that will help re-route the water back onto its original path.

The dam was originally used for a mill until the 1950s, when a storm moved the structure, sending much of the river toward the far bank.

Flooding will be alleviated once the dam itself is removed, and the habitat for wildlife should also improve.

The project will return the area to its original natural state. Officials say that this is good for Milnor Road, which is in danger of being undermined by the river.

Brian Cowden, of Trout Scapes River Restoration, says that archeologists are also on site to monitor the demolition. Cowden believes crews have found the original dam underneath that dates to the 1700s.

The project should be finished in 10 days.
