Attorneys delivered closing arguments and jurors began deliberations Tuesday in the samurai sword murder trial of a Hauppauge man.
Prosecutors accused Zachary Gibian, 20, of lying on the stand. They say the defendant made up tales of being sexually abused to evoke undeserved sympathy. While testifying, Gibian said his mother, Laura Nager, was really the murderer who nearly beheaded his stepfather, Scott Nager, in February 2005. He said he admitted to the killing initially to protect her. Gibian's mother invoked the Fifth Amendment when asked to appear on the witness stand.
If convicted of murder, Gibian could serve 25 years to life in prison. Jurors are scheduled to continue deliberating on Wednesday.
