Nassau police cracked down on a Roosevelt ice cream parlor Thursday for allegedly selling a lot more than frozen treats.
Police arrested Benjamin Fitzgerald, an employee at Santiago's Ices and Cream on Nassau Road, and charged him with selling crack-cocaine right over the counter. According to police, the 41-year-old Fitzgerald has sold the drugs out of the shop for about a month. They say neighbors tipped off police after witnessing few people leave Santiago's without ice cream.
This arrest marks the 16th time Fitzgerald, a known dealer in Roosevelt, has been apprehended on drug-related charges since 1987. The owner of Santiago's claims he was unaware of Fitzgerald's illegal activities and police say he has cooperated with the investigation.
