Police say a 39-year-old Islip woman is responsible for killing her elderly mother in a vicious attack Thursday.

Officers responded to a 911 call from Laurie Young, who reported her mother was dead in her bed. Homicide detectives say Young injured her 75-year-old mother Marlene on Wednesday, then withheld medical care because she feared being arrested. They say Laurie Young became engaged in an argument with her mother over groceries and then beat her.

The Suffolk County medical examiner determined Marlene Young suffered broken bones before she died. Laurie Young is charged with manslaughter.
