After weeks of criticism, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and other government officials have submitted a report to state lawmakers outlining recommended changes to the new bail reform law.
She says a “common sense coalition” came up with the suggestions that she hopes will be considered.
Curran says the No. 1 concern is the safety and security of communities. The suggested changes include not limiting the types of crimes for which a judge can set cash bail and allowing judges to exercise discretion when making decisions in cases before them.
"I think it's important to share what we're seeing on the ground here in Nassau County and in Suffolk County," says Curran.
The Nassau executive says the county will be collecting data on crime statistics for quarterly reports which will allow them to have a better understanding of the impact of the new law.
