A Hempstead organization is asking Long Islanders to open their hearts and food pantries to help the needy prepare a Thanksgiving feast.
Officials at the Mary Brennan INN say while many Long Islanders are affluent, thousands struggle every year to put food on the table. The organization serves people on Thanksgiving Day and also gives out turkeys so families can enjoy the holiday in their homes. Organizers say birds are going as quickly as people are donating them. The group gave out 1,999 turkeys last year and 1,121 alone this past Friday.
Dorit Bugoff, of Merrick, dropped off a turkey after hearing about the Mary Brennan INN at her church. She says it?s a worthy cause.
