On Monday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and President Donald Trump had a meeting at the White House in Washington – both leaving confident and united in a plan to get the state back up and running.
Gov. Cuomo said they discussed key ways the government would need to help the state, including with testing. In addition, Gov. Cuomo says President Trump also wanted to know what was working and what was not.
"We'll take the half of the equation that is working with the labs in the state and getting them to perform the tests. But we need the test kits from the manufacturers, the national manufacturers need the supply chain, that's what the federal government will be doing," says Gov. Cuomo.
Gov. Cuomo said President Trump committed to getting more coronavirus testing supplies from China and other manufacturers overseas to help the state with a big goal.
"We now do on average about 20,000 tests per day, our goal which is very aggressive and ambitions, but set it high and then try, our goal is to then double the 20,000 to get to 40,000 tests per day. We'd need several weeks to ramp up to that, but it is a very aggressive goal," says Gov. Cuomo.
Another positive from the meeting, the USS Comfort will be leaving New York so it can serve an area with a greater need.
