Officials nationwide are trying to get residents vaccinated against COVID-19, but the rollout has suffered and New York's supply is near running out.
It was one year ago Wednesday when a Washington man became the first person in the U.S. to be diagnosed with COVID-19. A year later, more than 400,000 Americans have died and millions have been sickened by the virus.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a warning about the depleting stock of the vaccine that could be empty in the next two to three days.
"What's clear now is we're going to be going from week to week and you will see a constant pattern of basically running out, waiting for the next week's allocation and then starting up again," says Cuomo.
More than 7 million New Yorkers are currently eligible to schedule a vaccination. Cuomo says the state has 1,200 sites for mass distribution, but not enough vaccine.
"We want to make sure distributors don't schedule any appointments for which they don't have a definitive allocation, because we don't know what we're going to get next week," says Cuomo.
The vaccine shortage comes as the United Kingdom variant of the virus is spreading. Cuomo announced two more cases were detected in Suffolk, bringing the total of such cases over 20 in the state.
The CDC says the highly contagious U.K. strain could dominate the U.S. by March, making the race to get shots in arms all the more pressing.
More vaccines are expected to be available as Pfizer and Moderna ramp up production and vaccines from other pharmaceutical companies are approved.
Until then, Cuomo is calling on the federal government to help.
"I urge the president to do what he can to increase supply immediately," says Cuomo.
