A crew of about 60 was out early Friday morning working to clean up an oil spill along the shore of Long Beach.
Surfers taking advantage of the warm weather on Thanksgiving noticed a sticky, tar-like substance on their feet. The Department of Environmental Conservation determined a passing commercial ship spilled oil into the waters and on the shore. Approximately 1,500-feet of Long Beach and 3,000-feet of Atlantic Beach shores are littered with balls of tar.
The DEC says crews are out on the beach shoveling and raking up the oil. It estimates 500 gallons spilled into the waters. The exact cause of the oil spill is still under investigation.
