Crews across Long Island are working to remove snow from busy downtown areas to make more room on streets and sidewalks.
Ever since Glen Cove got over a foot of snow last weekend, piles of snow are blocking parts of the streets and sidewalks, creating icy conditions and making the roads more dangerous.
Emanuel Grella, general foreman of the Department of Public Works, says this isn’t the first time they’ve taken on a task like this, but it hasn’t happened in years.
He says it’s a hard job, but it’s necessary to keep the community safe.
“People are climbing over mounds trying to get out of their cars. Or people are getting out of their cars and there’s an ice patch, and they could slip and fall. So, there’s a lot of reasons why….” Grella said. “But we can’t do it by hand. That’s why we have all these big machines.”
Crews are transporting the snow to Leech Circle Park in Glen Cove.
Floral Park, Kings Park and Smithtown are also working on snow removal efforts tonight.
