County Executive Laura Curran gave an update on COVID-19 in Nassau from Roosevelt Field Mall on Friday to mark the reopening of malls in the county. She also discussed preparations for Tropical Storm Fay.
BRIEFING NOTES:
-The county executive gave Friday's briefing from Roosevelt Field mall, which is reopening today. Other malls are opening in the coming days and weeks.
-Curran says there are no new deaths to report in the county. She says she county should be model of how to reopen for other areas.
-Curran says malls are an "economic anchor" for the county. She says Simon Properties, which owns Roosevelt Field, acted quickly to implement filtration systems to reopen more safely. She notes that the mall employs 4,000 people.
-There are some changes in effect: capacity is limited to 50%, there are one-way aisles, face masks are required; workers will be tested; new cleaning procedures are implemented.
-Nassau Office of Emergency Management is open and ready to help keep people safe as Tropical Storm Fay bears down on Long Island. Curran says the county is expecting high winds, rain, possible flooding.
