An audit by Nassau County Comptroller Howard Weitzman raises red flags about the spending habits of a Great Neck sewage facility.
With personnel issues and breakdowns in sewage processing at the East Shore Road plant, Weitzman expressed concern on the special taxing district that serves approximately 15,000. Weitzman says there were improprieties in bidding competition. He says a company was paid $1 million for its consultation and then immediately received a contract for the work made necessary by its recommendations. The sewage district's attorney contends the company earned the contract because it was already familiar with the system.
Town governments in Nassau County say they will evaluate the operations of special sewage tax districts. At the state level, Governor Eliot Spitzer (D-NY) plans to create a commission on local government efficiency.
