The city?s Department of Education is finding out that cutting costs will bring back more money to Bronx and city schools.
Schools Chancellor Joel Klein says by cutting transportation, maintenance and cleaning budgets he will save at least $40 million by the start of the 2007-2008 school year. Most of the extra savings will be used for new classroom programs.
Half of the savings comes from cuts to the yellow school bus service. Klein has come up with a new system for the yellow bus service that requires parents to register their children for transportation by October 6. All parents must fill out forms provided by the schools even if the children are already riding the buses. According to Klein, those students who don?t sign up for the service will get a MetroCard.
