A correction officer says he was viciously beaten during an unprovoked attack by an inmate last week inside the Nassau County jail in East Meadow.
Officer Daniel Holland says he was was alone on patrol in a 50-inmate dormitory when 40-year-old Roger Bissoon, of Hempstead, attacked him. Bissoon was in jail on rape and burglary charges.
On Tuesday, dozens of Holland's fellow officers filled the courthouse demanding that the new assault charges against Bissoon would not be reduced.
News 12 is told there are no security cameras inside the dormitory area where Holland was attacked. Union officials say that while more security cameras could help prevent future attacks, what they really needed are more officers inside the jail to keep the peace.
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran says 40 new correction officers recently graduated from the academy and that the county is trying to hire more to help.
A $25,000 bond was set on the new assault charge. Bissoon was already being held on $500,000 bond for prior rape and burglary charges.
