A Coram beer distributor has been shut down following numerous complaints, violations and having its building condemned.
Following an investigation, authorities say Superstar Beverage was slapped with numerous violations from the State Liquor Authority for selling to people under 21 and other licensing violations. Police Commissioner Timothy Sini says the business attracted a lot of crime.
"You have prostitution here. You have drug dealing , the sale of alcohol to underage individuals," says Sini. "All of that poses significant public safety risks."
Brookhaven town condemned the building after inspectors found roughly 20 fire code and building code violations. Coram Civic Association president Erma Gluck says homeless people would sit around drinking near the store.
Suffolk Legislator Sarah Anker says the condemning of this building is a victory for the struggling community. She says she's created a task force to beef up security in the area and try to get the homeless off the streets.
"We've spotlighted this area," says Anker. "We will continue to do what we can to make sure this area is safe to shop."
The owners of Superstar Beverage tell News 12 that there is a problem in the neighborhood for which they are being blamed. They say their intention is to work with the town. News 12 tried to reach out to the building's owner, Eastern M Realty of Smithtown, but has not heard back.
