Police say a man who was driving under the influence led officers on a chase, plowed through a fence at Republic Airport and then drove onto an airport runway.
The chain of events began when an officer on patrol saw the driver of a Volkswagen Jetta blow a red light on Mount Avenue in Wyandanch shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday, police say. The officer attempted to pull the vehicle over but the driver, identified as Kroy Moore, 34, did not stop. The officer pursued the vehicle.
A moment later, officers spotted the vehicle on New Highway in Farmingdale. That's when police say Moore, of Wyandanch, drove through a fence at Republic Airport and then drove down a runway and through the airport. He continued to drive the Jetta until it became inoperable, and police say he then attempted to flee on foot.
Moore was apprehended and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and alcohol, criminal trespass, false personation, criminal mischief and unlawful fleeing of a police officer.
He is due to be arraigned in court on Sunday.
