A convicted sex offender from East Northport faces new child pornography charges.
Federal prosecutors say convicted, registered, level two sex offender Brian Newton is once again viewing child pornography. The East Northport man was arraigned on federal charges in Central Islip today.
Prosecutors say Newton viewed and shared video and images of sex acts involving children as young as 2, and admitted as much to FBI agents when they executed a search warrant at his home on Thursday.
The criminal complaint says Newton “looks for everything and anything, all ages and types" in regard to child pornography.
Prosecutors say Newton traded the images and videos online using video sharing websites, including Dropbox. The criminal complaint also says that Newton admitted to requesting pictures and videos through interactions online with people who he believed to be children.
Laura Ahearn, executive director of Parents for Megan's Law, points out that Newton was convicted on similar charges in 2014.
“He's a level 2 sex offender who was convicted of possessing horrible images of child pornography, and he served only 90 days in jail. So if we're really serious about punishing people who commit these types of crimes, we really need to make sure that we are passing laws that make sentencing much more stricter,” says Ahearn.
Prosecutors say this is Newton's second violation of his probation stemming from his 2014 conviction. He was also previously found to have an unauthorized cellphone.
Newton pleaded not guilty today and is due back in court Tuesday.
