Construction for the Bay Park Conveyance Project is underway in Nassau County.
The project will redirect treated water from the Bay Park Sewage Treatment plant to the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant's ocean outfall, covering nearly 15 miles.
Officials say the move is vital to reducing nitrogen pollution and restoring water quality in the Western Bays and surrounding South Shore communities.
"This is going to change fundamentally the entire South Shore in this area," says Gov. Andrew Cuomo. "It makes total sense. Ambitious yes, expensive yes, a lot of work yes, but essential."
When completed, the project will divert up to 75 million gallons of treated water per day.
