A Central Islip woman?s dying wish has been fulfilled, thanks to her husband and Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington).
Alicia Macarro is stricken with brain cancer and doctors say she has only a few months, if not weeks, left to live. Macarro says her final wish was to be with her daughter, Joanna, who she has not seen in 16 years. Macarro emigrated from El Salvador in 1990 to make a better life for Joanna, leaving her 17-month-old daughter in the care of an aunt and uncle.
Michael Macarro, Alicia?s husband and Joanna?s stepfather, enlisted the help of Congressman Israel to make his wife?s wish come true. Joanna says she is very happy to see her mother, but at the same time feels incredible sadness.
Officials say Israel went one step further, getting both Alicia and Joanna permanent U.S. residency.
