Coney Island Prep is fighting to combat learning loss during the summer for their elementary school students.
The Summer Boost initiative is a program that was created back in 2022 to combat COVID-related learning loss, as well as what teachers call, a summer slide.
For almost five weeks this summer, 75 students in first to fourth grade worked with teachers on their English Language Arts skills and math skills.
“In first through fourth grade, students learn a lot of foundational literacy skills,” says Clarissa Terry, instructional leader for the Summer Boost program. “And after fourth grade, they can tend to forget or lose some of the skills they’ve learned.”
Administrators at Coney Island Prep say they feel confident students will leave the program on Aug. 6 prepared for the upcoming school year.
