Residents of a condominium complex in West Islip are concerned about plans for new emergency generators that would be used to power up their neighbor, Good Samaritan Hospital.
The hospital wants to tear down a small building, which it owns, to build a taller building that would store emergency generators.
Residents of the condo complex are opposed to the size of the building, and are also concerned about loud noises and potential fumes from the generators.
However, the hospital's assistant vice president of facilities says the generators will only be used for emergency situations.
Facility officials say the hospital's current seven generators are kept at ground level and are about 20 years old. The new generators will be state-of-the-art and will be elevated, which is important for patient safety in case of catastrophic weather and water events from the Great South Bay.
It would take about two years to build the generator plant. The hospital is awaiting funds from FEMA and approval from the town board before it moves forward with the plan.
