City officials say the Department of Education?s school expansion efforts just aren?t cutting it in the face of a student population boom.

City Comptroller William C. Thompson released a report Friday detailing the DOE?s inadequacies. He says its planning process to build more schools is broken.

Councilman Jimmy Vacca (D-The Bronx) says evidence of Thompson?s characterization can readily be seen throughout the Bronx. P.S. 194 on Zerega Avenue, Vacca says, has already undergone several modifications to deal with an increasing number of students.

Thompson?s report concludes the city is providing new seats in classrooms at a much slower rate than the population is increasing. Throggs Neck, Highbridge, Soundview and Castle Hill are some of the neighborhoods experiencing such a boom.
