A potential new hire is raising eyebrows in the Roosevelt School District.

Critics are questioning why the financially struggling district is considering hiring a consultant who charges $350 per hour.

Lance Clarke, a lawyer and former village justice, met with new Superintendent Dr. Deborah Wortham, then submitted a written proposal. In it, he offers to work as the district's "government liaison consultant" to help acquire special funding.

Clarke says he'd charge $350 per hour and would likely work 35-40 hours per month from now through June. He says it's a rate that's well below that of other so-called lobbyists.

Clarke's endorsement by Democratic Assemblywoman Earlene Hooper prompted someone to lodge a complaint with the Nassau District Attorney's Office. A spokesperson for the DA says the office is reviewing the complaints.

Clarke's interview with the school board last week was postponed and has not yet been rescheduled.
