Commuters say they're worried the LIRR will hike ticket prices to recoup the money it lost during the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing New York PAUSE orders.
New York City will be entering Phase 2 Monday, as Long Island prepares for Phase 3 Wednesday.
The railroad has no plans to increase fares, however the agency is expected to vote on a scheduled 4% fare hike that would go into effect next year.
It hasn't been confirmed when the vote will be held. The president of the Long Island Rail Road Commuter Campaign, Peter Haynes, says increasing ticket prices for the train might actually decrease ridership, further hurting the railroad.
He says ideally, the LIRR should decrease fares to increase ridership.
Riders hope the railroad finds an alternative to making the ride to and from New York City more expensive. The MTA says it hopes funds from the federal government will help with operating costs.
