The American Legion opened its doors in 1935 but is now in danger of closing due to COVID. The post relies heavily on outside party rentals for income, but bookings have dwindled because of the pandemic.
"Before COVID, we had about nine to 10 rentals that were scheduled throughout the spring and summer," says Bill McCrindle. "But since COVID hit, we've lost all that revenue."
The post held a fundraiser Friday in hopes of raising money to stay open.
"The key factor for today's event is getting us out of the basement, getting out of the red of debt, and pay our bills and take care of our home, take care of our veterans." says Post Commander Peter Wenninger.
Wenninger says the Legion provides support services to veterans battling post-traumatic stress disorder. He says it's important to have a place for veterans to go where they feel at home and can talk with fellow members.
Members of the community have provided generous donations and hope the giving continues so the last American Legion in East Meadow can stay open.
