The U.S. Coast Guard has named one of its cutter boats after service member Nathan Bruckenthal, of Stony Brook.
Bruckenthal died in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004 while stopping a suicide attack on an oil terminal in the Arabian Gulf.
The Coast Guard says if not for his action, more people would have died and there would have been great environmental and infrastructure damage.
At that time, Bruckenthal was the first Coast Guard member killed in action since the Vietnam War.
