The city of Yonkers began demolition a decades-old public housing building Monday to make way for a more modern building.

The 1940s era housing complex known as Cottage Place Gardens is set to come down and will be replaced by 178 Warburton Avenue at the Ridgeway.

"When this comes down and the new building is built there will be 81 units, eight floors and it will be affordable," says Wilson Kimball, president of the Municipal Housing Authority for the city of Yonkers .

The new building will be similar to others nearby that were renovated and equipped for 21st century living.

Kimball says the size of the units and the closet and storage space along with the kitchen amenities are going to make the apartments revolutionary compared to what was there before.

The urban renewal project is spearheaded by the Municipal Housing Authority for the city of Yonkers and The Community Builders.

"We're already hearing really positive things from the residents of the surrounding buildings who moved in, and they're just happy to have housing that's quality housing," says Lauren Hauck, of The Community Builders.

Construction on 178 Warburton Avenue at the Ridgeway is expected to start in 2022.
