Suffolk boaters say there are dangerous conditions at the Nissequogue River State Park that they want resolved.
They are calling upon local and state leaders to extend dredging beyond the Kings Park Bluff boat ramp to the Nissequogue River State Park. Dredging involves the removal of debris from the bottom of the water.
Without dredging, boaters say the waterway will remain blocked and unsafe – and more kayak and Jet Ski rescues will be needed.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation said that as per the plans in the permit, dredging is to begin at the boat ramp. A five-year maintenance dredging permit to Suffolk County in Sept. 2025, and a modification to that permit was approved and issued in Dec. 2025. The permit authorizes the county to conduct hydraulic dredging in the Nissequogue River navigation channel at the mouth of the river and adjacent to the Long Island Sound.
Suffolk County officials declined to comment on this report.
