SUNDAY COASTAL WINTER STORM UPDATE: All eyes are on what will be a big winter storm developing over the weekend, but there is still a question about how it will impact Long Island.
ALERTS: The National Weather Service has issued another "cold weather advisory" for Nassau County from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday for wind chills around -5 to -10 degrees. Even though there is no advisory for Suffolk, cold-weather impacts will also remain for the county. This is one of those times where Suffolk County is just on the border of the criteria needed for the official cold weather advisory to be issued. A cold weather advisory is issued when wind chills are expected to be between -5 degrees and -19 degrees within 24 hours.
REST OF THIS WEEK: Bitter, dangerous cold lingers through the end of the week. There can also be a snow shower or scattered flurries this evening and overnight. Otherwise, mainly cloudy and just absolutely frigid. The coldest air has not even arrived yet! That will be Thursday night through Friday - as if it hasn't been cold enough. Wind chills can be well below zero on Friday morning and still close to zero Friday afternoon.
SUNDAY FORECAST TRENDS: While we are still watching the trends with computer model guidance, there is a noticeable "lean" east now, keeping the worst of the storm offshore. That said, we can still get a couple of inches of snow on Long Island, with several inches possible over the east end of Suffolk County. It could end up that Nassau County gets a coating to a couple of inches of snow, while eastern Suffolk County gets 4 inches or more. That is how close of a call this is, but the trends are for less of a major storm in terms of snow totals area-wide.
OTHER POTENTIAL IMPACTS: Strong winds can still be a factor, regardless of how much snow Long Island gets no Sunday, with 20 to 45 mph gusts possible. There is also the chance for at least minor coastal flooding, which is exacerbated by Sunday's full moon.
WHEN WILL WE KNOW MORE? The News 12 Storm Watch Team will have enough information to make a first call on snow forecast totals throughout the day on Thursday, with higher confidence forecasts each day leading up to Sunday. Please check back for the latest updates!
BEYOND SUNDAY'S STORM CHANCES: The weather into next week looks to be slightly less harsh-feeling than this week. It will still be cold with high temperatures in the upper 30s to low 30s and nighttime lows in the teens to low 20s. Our next chance for at least snow showers after Sunday looks to be next Thursday.
Have a great night and stay warm!
