Tomorrow is going to be one of those winter days on Long Island that starts snowy and slippery, and ends up wet, slushy and just annoying by the afternoon. Please use caution traveling on Tuesday! Eventually, conditions just become wet, but still slick for the late-morning and through the evening commute.
SNOW TO RAIN TIMING:
Snow develops by around 4 a.m. Tuesday with temperatures in the low to mid-30s. As the snow continues to fall, temperatures will fall a couple of degrees initially. This can allow roads and other untreated surfaces to become snow covered.
If you live on the immediate South Shore or East End of Long Island, you will experience a very fast change to rain. Do not expect much more than a trace on the ground in these areas before even that gets washed away, but travel will still be wet and slick.
North of the Long Island Expressway, it will take a few hours longer for the snow to change to rain. This is where there is a better change for up to around one inch of snow.
After 10 a.m. Tuesday, most of Long Island will be experiencing rain. There can still be a few wet snowflakes mixing in, especially on the North Shore, but temperatures will be in the upper 30s at this point. Any snow accumulation will start to wash away, but travel will remain slippery and slushy.
Periods of light to moderate rain will continue through the start of the afternoon before ending from west to east from around 3 to 6 p.m. The sky will gradually clear to just a partly cloudy sky overnight.
SNOW TOTALS BEFORE GETTING WASHED AWAY BY RAIN:
After tomorrow, Christmas Eve Wednesday looks nice, but windy and chilly. Christmas Day will be mostly cloudy with a slight chance for a shower or spotty drizzle.
NEXT STORM CHANCE:
The News 12 Storm Watch Team is monitoring another chance for snow or a wintry mix of snow and some rain Friday afternoon through early Saturday. A few inches of snow cannot be ruled out at this time. Much clearer details will emerge by Wednesday, so please stay with us on-air, online and the FREE News 12 app for updates through the week.
