The coaching staff at Chaminade High School were honored by Nassau County on Thursday for their actions that helped save a student athlete's life.
Chaminade assistant coach Bob Paul and athletic trainer Jorge Vargas rushed to 17-year-old P.J. Kellachan after he went into cardiac arrest during practice. They resuscitated him by performing CPR and using a defibrillator before paramedics arrived.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman honored the coaches and trainers for saving the teen's life, saying he was thankful the campus had the resources they needed.
Kellachan was also grateful for his coaches and trainers.
"I'm very grateful for having such a great staff that sprung into action when it really mattered," Kellachan said.
Kellachan said he is feeling better and hopes to get back on the court soon.
