An apartment complex in Central Islip went up in flames Tuesday night.
Authorities say the blaze broke out around 9:30 p.m. at the Coventry Village complex on Coventry Lane. Some residents tried to escape the flames through their windows.
Investigators say nine people were injured in the fire, including three firefighters. One of the victims was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries.
Six apartments were destroyed in the fire. Officials say the firefighters had trouble preventing the blaze from spreading because there wasn?t enough water.
?The problem is that it's a small water main that is supplying the complex here,? Central Islip Fire Chief Richard Huttie says. ?We needed a lot more water out there at the time of the fire.?
Islip Town Fire Marshal Michael Catalano says Suffolk County Water Authority is not responsible. He says officials have been ?down there multiple times during the summer working on it and they say it's OK. So if there's a problem you'd have to discuss that with Suffolk County Water."
The Town of Islip says the complex is in violation of nine town codes, including having uncovered electrical wires and no carbon monoxide detectors.
