Residents of Bohemia thought they had won a victory in the fight to prevent a pair of cellphone towers from going up in their neighborhood, but it seems the towers are still on the table.
As News 12 has reported, the Bohemia Fire Department has been seeking for two years to get the green light on its tower plans, in a bid to improve communications. Residents say they are worried about potential health issues and sinking property values.
The issue was thought to have been resolved last week when fire officials told residents they had canceled the contract and would not build the two towers. However, residents say they learned today that the department's application before the town Zoning Board of Appeals has not been withdrawn.
Angry residents accused fire department officials of being dishonest. "The fire house flat-out lied during the last meeting," said resident Christine Dimaro. "We found out the application is still in, they're not canceling it, and they have no intention of canceling it."
The Bohemia Fire Department said it is moving ahead with plans to improve radio communications, but it is still unsure what that will entail. Meanwhile, residents say they are preparing for a legal battle.
