Catholic Charities workers across Long Island are doing what they can to help the elderly as temperatures continue to rise.
The Meals on Wheels program usually delivers food to about 2,000 seniors in Nassau County each week. During the scorching heat wave, however, workers are also making sure clients are cooling off and drinking fluids. They say they know who are the frailest seniors and who might need special attention.
Workers at Catholic Charities in Roosevelt are also making phone calls to check up on the elderly. Sister Barbara Auletta says many seniors worry about bills and don?t like to put on air conditioners. Officials say these services can be a lifesaver, especially for those who live alone.
