Some Long Island drivers say they would be lost without their GPS, but the devices could be the very item inviting thieves into their cars.
More and more GPS devices are being stolen throughout the Island, and police are warning drivers to keep them well hidden. While those who remove the GPS systems from their vehicles may feel safer, police say they may not be doing enough.
Officer Dan Johannessen says many drivers leave behind the suction cups that fasten the GPS systems to windshields or dashboards, which can also invite thieves to look inside the car. Johannessen says officers are handing out fliers at train stations warning drivers about the thefts.
Police say satellite radio receivers, laptops and cell phones are also big targets.
