A car crashed into a North Amityville home early this morning, and police say the impact was enough to crack the foundation.
The crash happened just after 5 a.m. The driver was headed eastbound on Joyce Avenue when police say she lost control of her 2007 Toyota, plowed through the home's fence and then crashed into the foundation.
Homeowner Billy Heenan was getting ready for work when he heard what sounded like an explosion.
"I first ran downstairs to see if it was something downstairs," he says. "And then I ran outside, opened the door ... and lo and behold, there's a car in there."
It took crews hours to get the car out. The impact left a large crack in the foundation and now the home is uninhabitable. Heenan estimates the damage is in the tens of thousands of dollars.
"The direct hit was to the laundry room," he says. "There's my oil tank, washing machine. It's probably all compromised."
The couple says their daughter, who has autism, was so distraught that she was taken to a family member's home. Their son stayed at a friend's house last night and got a frantic call from his mom early this morning.
"I was like, 'Excuse me, can you repeat that?' Then she was saying, 'You have to get home, you have to get home. There's a car in the kitchen,'" he says.
The 56-year-old driver was not issued any tickets. She and her passenger were treated for minor injuries.
