Police say speed was a contributing factor in a fatal crash on the Southern State Parkway Saturday that caused the car to burst into flames.
According to police, a Mercedes Benz was traveling eastbound in the left lane at a high rate of speed, lost control and slammed into the Grand Avenue overpass in Baldwin around 5 a.m. Another accident occurred at the same location three weeks prior where a BMW slammed into the overpass, killing three young men. Police say speed was a factor in that crash too.
Traffic was backed up for miles as cars were diverted so police could investigate the scene. Residents who live near the accident say crashes are becoming all too common in that particular area.
