Residents on a street in Centereach say they're still water-logged after Wednesday night's heavy downpours and flooding.
Some homeowners on Park Street were still stuck in their homes Thursday after the remnants of Ida came through overnight and covered the area with water, making it impassable.
Vietnam veteran Robert Ganardella, of Centereach, spoke to News 12 over the phone since he was trapped in his home surrounded by water. He says the flooding in and around his home is becoming too frequent during heavy storms, and the rains from Ida was his tipping point.
“I just can’t take it anymore. I’m done…I’m 70 years old,” he says. “It’s a disaster in there. My basement is full of water, my boiler again, my hot water heater again, my air conditioner again. I’m just done.”
Homeowners say a sump in the neighborhood is the cause of the flooding during heavy rains— it was filled to the top after Ida.
Residents say they've called the Town of Brookhaven to complain about it
However, neighbor Michael Krauth says he gets little response each time he calls the town. He says so far all they’ve told him is “we’ll look into it.”
People are hoping pumps can be brought to the street to help speed up the process of cleaning the water so they can begin assessing the damage.
Brookhaven's town attorney told News 12 in a statement, "Brookhaven Town is aware of the issues in this area after last night's record rainfall. Because of litigation filed against the town by the residents, we are unable to comment on this matter."
