A planned public road between two active runways at Calverton Airport will pose a threat to homeland security, aviators in Calverton said Tuesday.
The Town of Riverhead approved the new road, which will be built on top of a closed road that runs between two runways and through the former Grumman plant in Calverton.
Aviation expert Richard Wyerioski said there won't be a fence to keep cars from crossing over onto the runways.
"It's unsafe. It's dangerous. And it leaves the airport open to acts of terrorism and vandalism," Wyerioski said. "It's an accident waiting to happen."
Ray Maynard, owner of Calverton Airport-based Skydive Long Island, said the road "is going to be a serious safety problem."
Town Supervisor Phil Cardinale said the road has been planned for years and received the OK from all necessary state and county bodies. Since it is a road and not a physical structure, Cardinale said it did not require Federal Aviation Administration approval.
Construction is scheduled to begin shortly and take about six months, Cardinale said.
