Federal budget cuts are hurting members of the Westhampton-based 106th Air Rescue Wing.
A total of 220 military technicians are forced to take unpaid furloughs once a week through the end of September, adding up to a 20 percent pay cut.
Rep. Tim Bishop is co-sponsoring a bill that would exempt military technicians from furloughs. Bishop says it has passed its first hurdle in the House but is still part of a large defense bill.
If Congress doesn't act before Oct. 1, Bishop says it could mean more furloughs and possible layoffs for members of the 106th Air Rescue Wing.
Summer recess for Congress is expected to begin Friday. Bishop says he plans to vote against adjournment in hopes of getting the bill passed, but says things are not looking good at this point.
